Department Liaison Policy

Liaison Policy

Liaison activities make up an important part of the library's public relations program, providing a two-way communication channel between the library and the faculty. Librarians performing liaison duties carry information concerning library policies, services and collections out to the faculty and departments and bring back information on courses, research and materials needs. The goal of the liaison program is to foster cooperation and to provide a formal opportunity for feedback which will ultimately be used to enhance the library's capability to meet the university's information needs.

Librarians are assigned liaison responsibilities in specific departments. Liaison activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending departmental meetings one per academic year or at the department's request.
  • Making contact with the department at least once per term.
  • Becoming knowledgeable concerning the subject matter, scope of courses, and research in the department.
  • Providing information on library policies, services, and collections to the faculty in the department.
  • Providing a vehicle for expression of faculty opinions, concerns, and advice relating to the library.
  • Serving as a contact point from which faculty inquiries can be referred to the appropriate library staff member.

Participating in the development of the library collection in the liaison subject areas by reading and circulating to department faculty catalogs, reviews and brochures, and recommending potential purchases to the Collection Development Committee.
