Interpreting, Printing, and Citing the Form41 Report (ASCI 602)
Interpreting the Form41 Report
At the top of each section of the Form41 report, you will see the word "Quarter," followed by a set of numbers in brackets. These numbers correspond to the year and quarters the data covers. For example, [98:1,2,3,4] covers the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters of 1998. The numbers given in the report are cumulative totals for all four quarters.
The data in Form41 reports is presented in columns. At the top of each column is a series of three letters. The first two letters are the two-letter code for the carrier (e.g., AA for American Airlines). The third letter denotes the particular region of operation the data covers. There may be as many as five columns:
A=Atlantic Operations
D=Domestic Operations
L=Latin Operations
P=Pacific Operations
Total=System-wide Operations
Thus, the three-letter code "AAD" denotes American Airlines' Domestic Operations, while "AAL" represents the carrier's Latin Operations, and "Total" reflects the total for the entire system, etc. If there is no column for a region, then the airline did not have operations in that region for that time period.
The last two pages of the report detail the Form41 schedules and processes used to derive the data in the report. Please note that the "Break-Even Load Factor" was calculated using a formula obtained from Airline Monitor. It is determined by dividing total operating costs by total revenue and multiplying the load factor by the quotient.
Printing the Form41 Report
To have the columns aligned correctly, you will need to print the Form41 report using landscape (not portrait) orientation. Depending upon the browser and printer you are using, you may also have to manipulate the margins or page setup for your web browser.
